LS-DYNA, a product Livermore Software Technology Corp. (LSTC), is a multi-purpose finite element program capable of simulating complex real world problems. The software is used by many industries including Automobile, Aerospace, Construction, Military, Manufacturing, and Bio-engineering industries.
LS-DYNA is a highly non-linear, transient dynamic finite element analysis using explicit time integration. LS-DYNA's potential applications are large and can be applied to many fields. In a given simulation, any of LS-DYNA's features can be combined to model a wide range of physical problems. There are many preprocessors available in the market for LS-DYNA input files. LSTC has its own preprocessor, LS-PrePost, which is freely distributed and runs without a license. Licensees of LS-DYNA automatically have access to all of the program's capabilities, from simple linear static mechanical analysis up to advanced thermal and flow solving methods. In addition, you have access to LS-OPT, a standalone design optimization and probabilistic analysis package with an interface to LS-DYNA.
LS-DYNA is the world's most advanced general purpose nonlinear finite element program. It is widely accepted as the premier analysis software package for today's most challenging engineering applications. LS-DYNA can predict how a prototype will respond to real-world events, thus minimizing the time spent in design and money spent on experimental testing. LS-DYNA is well optimized on all platforms and can also run on MPP platforms. Its accuracy has been proven through correlation with experimental data. LS-DYNA is an invaluable tool, and can save you both time and money.
LS-PrePost is an advanced interactive program for preparing input data for LS-DYNA and processing the results from LS-DYNA analyses. The user interface is intuitive and easy to use. All data and menus are designed in a logical and efficient way to minimize the number of mouse clicks and operations. LS-PrePost runs on all Unix/Linux workstations and MS Windows computers utilizing the OpenGL graphics standard to achieve fast rendering and XY plotting.
LS-OPT is a standalone Design Optimization and Probalistic Analysis package with an interface to LS-DYNA. The Optimization capability in LS-OPT is based on Response Surface Methodology and Design of Experiments. The D-Optimality Criterion is used for the effective distribution of sampling points for effective generalization of the design response. LS-OPT allows the combination of multiple disciplines and/or cases for the improvement of a unique design. Multiple criteria can be specified and analysis results can be combined arbitrarily using C or FORTRAN type mathematical expressions.
Applications of LS-DYNA:
-
Automotive Crashworthiness & Occupant Safety - It is widely used by the automotive industry to analyze vehicle designs. LS-DYNA accurately predicts a car's behavior in a collision and the effects of the collision upon the car's occupants. With LS-DYNA, automotive companies and their suppliers can test car designs without having to tool or experimentally test a prototype.
-
Metal Forming - In this field, the software is most widely used applications in sheetmetal forming. LS-DYNA accurately predicts the stresses and deformations experienced by the metal, and determines if the metal will fail.
-
Aerospace - LS-DYNA is widely used by the aerospace industry to simulate bird strike, jet engine blade containment, and structural failure.
-
Multiphysics - Pursuing its objective of solving coupled multiphysics problem, latest LS-DYNA includes three new solvers: Incompressible CFD, Electromagnetics and CESE/ Compressible CFD and Chemistry
- Other applications include:
- Drop testing
- Can and shipping container design
- Electronic component design
- Glass forming
- Plastics, mold, and blow forming
- Biomechanics (heart valves)
- Metal cutting
- Earthquake engineering
- Failure analysis
- Sports equipment (golf clubs, golf balls, baseball bats, helmets)
- Civil engineering (offshore platforms, pavement design)
